The Wordbox Workshop returns — 8-week online poetry workshopping groups for emerging writers, to read, discuss and receive feedback on their work.

Led by award-winning poet Angela T. Carr, the Zoom sessions will give participants the opportunity to present new work each week, using a tried-and-tested workshopping format developed from the teachings of lateral thinker Edward de Bono.

Together, the group will:

  • Identify the themes at work in each poem and discuss how to clarify and amplify these ideas for maximum impact,

  • Examine the structural elements of the poem and identify opportunities to strengthen its language and construction,

  • Examine the poem from the perspective of a reader and/or editor, to identify edits and/or missing information.

Suitable for emerging/intermediate writers sending poems to journals and/or competitions, who want to improve the quality of their work.

Max. 5no. writers per workshop group.

Morning, Afternoon, Evening & Weekend groups available - select option below.

Participants are required to submit work in advance of the weekly session and each poem will receive between 25-30 minutes of the group’s time.

The 8x8 Wordbox Workshop is designed as a follow-on to Writing Slant: Making a Poem, a six-week taught programme taking a deep-dive into the tricks and techniques of editing poetry for publication.

What Writers Say About Wordbox Workshops:

‘Angela is a wonderful facilitator and listener. She created a very safe and professional space. All feedback was warmly and competently given and participants were encouraged to participate in discussions. It is very encouraging to share your work in a small group and to have an opportunity to have one of your poems critiqued every week. A really great learning opportunity to work with such a gracious and talented poet.’ – AO’R (Ire)

‘I really don't want it to end, it's been by far the most useful editing workshop I have ever taken part in. I now have a growing confidence that I can take my work to another level. Learning to look at a poem through the eyes of an editor improved my understanding of how I work but also how to read other peoples poems.’ - RG (UK)

‘The clear structure for the feed back let me internalize ways to consider my work so that I can improve all of it, not just what I bring in to the workshop. And yet I loved the camaraderie of all the poets. The way Angela runs it, there is such a respect for the work, I never had to worry about being sideswiped with some painful remark. It's a safe space.’ - ESG (US)

I’d definitely recommend it to other writers – it offers a great balance of support and challenge in an absolutely safe, respectful, friendly atmosphere. The genuine encouragement and honest searching feedback has helped me fine tune my writing further, and it's helped re-ground me at a time I was feeling quite wobbly about my writing.’ PE (UK)

Personally, I learned a lot. This is quite an intensive workshop and very good value for money… each person gets a really good critique of their work. Angela is a brilliant facilitator, so no one person dominates the session. Mutual respect is at the core of the workshop.’ – AK (Ire)

‘Personally, I have found this indispensable. I have really benefited from the structured approach and the opportunity to share each others poems weekly providing the tools to help me further critique my own work - as well as by other poets. I am returning for more.’ - RH (UK)

‘Angela's workshops will help you take your poems to another level. The supportive, encouraging atmosphere and great suggestions… will help you finish the poems that are most important to you and give you renewed confidence for your writing. I learned to trust myself and my own instincts more and to be willing to take more risks in my writing.’ - CW (US)

‘I really cherished the opportunity to share work in progress with like minded people who provided a rich and often surprising source of critical comment and feedback, in a supportive creative environment… What I came away with was much improved and revitalised.’ - TS (UK)

'I appreciated the sustained close reading of the poems, the positive atmosphere and Angela's management of the process. I genuinely felt we all improved by paying attention to the structure. The biggest takeaway was learning how my poems are seen - or not seen - by others, and Angela's superb insight into the Voice.' - LS (Ire)
